How to Connect a Domain to Wix Using the Pointing Method

Updated: Dec 13, 2023

To link your website's domain to Wix without moving your domain's DNS settings from their current location, you can use the pointing method.

Usually, we suggest not using the pointing method because we can't help with issues in accounts hosted by other companies. But, if your domain has complex DNS settings that you don't want to change, then pointing could be the right choice for you.

Before you begin: You must upgrade your Wix site to a Premium plan before you can connect your domain.

Step 1 | Add Your Domain to Your Wix Account

Before you make changes to your domain's DNS settings, you need to add your domain to your Wix account. Here's how to do it:

  1. Go to the "Domains" section in your Wix account.

  2. Click on "Add an Existing Domain."

  3. Choose "Connect a domain you already own."

  4. Pick the website you want to link to your domain and click "Next."

  5. Type in your domain name and select "Let's Go."

  6. Confirm that you own the domain by clicking "I own this domain."

  7. Check the information shown on the screen and then click "Start."

  8. At the top of the page, you'll see a sentence with a "Pointing" link – click on it.

  9. Finally, choose "Switch to Pointing" to complete the process.

Step 2 | Update the DNS records in your domain host account

To complete the setup, you need to update some settings for your domain. These settings are known as DNS records and can be found in the account of the company where you purchased your domain.

In your Wix account, you'll find easy-to-follow instructions. These will guide you through the process of changing the DNS records in your domain host account.

Make sure to keep the Wix instruction page open as you follow the steps in your domain host's account. The instructions will clearly explain what needs to be done, including the specific settings you should apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I seeing a 'www.www.' loop in my browser's address bar?

If your browser's address bar shows a 'www.www.' loop before your domain, it suggests that your DNS records might be set up incorrectly, or they haven't fully updated yet.

Here are steps to fix this issue:

  1. Double-check that you have entered the correct DNS records in your domain host account. Remember, you need to add both the A record and the CNAME record to correctly direct your domain.

  2. Give it up to 48 hours for your DNS records to completely update.

  3. Clear the cache in your web browser.

  4. Perform a DNS flush.

  5. Try reloading your website.

Does Wix support the use of DNSSEC or DNS Proxies?

Wix does not work with Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) or DNS Proxies such as Cloudflare. To make sure your domain updates properly, it's important to ensure these options are disabled before linking your domain to a Wix website.
